User Based Support by NP

If you have ever reviewed IT service providers in the past, you may have found that most products boil down to a list of supported devices, and then another list of additional products that you need just as much as support but are charged extra for. This is ill suited to modern SME’s. Cloud technologies and the increasing versatility required from workers are two things that can lead to a bloated bill for your businesses IT.

To combat this and in order to diversify our offering, NP have developed User Based Support. UBS is designed to make IT easier to budget for, and is suited to office based, IT reliant companies.

Rather than charge per PC, per server, per software license etc… UBS ties as many services as possible into one monthly, per user price. All essential services, from industry leading anti-virus to Microsoft 365, are encompassed in our range of plans. Each plan can be mixed and matched to best suit individual staff members.

Support for network devices such as servers is not charged for. Each user should be able to access resources on your network so this is included within UBS.

Our engineers use a remote monitoring software to ensure we offer a truly proactive service. Every customer is asked for their feedback following a ticket resolution. Ninety eight of our last 100 feedback ratings were positive (see for yourself! – https://np.technology/about-np.html).

This forward thinking approach and partnerships with industry leading technology companies has seen us named in the top 501 IT service providers in the world. We are confident that we can be the cure to your IT headaches.

Business as usual – Your urgent Coronavirus checklist

To ensure your team can work as normally as possible from home.

On the 3rd March, the Government published their Coronavirus action plan. In his address, Boris Johnson said that up to a fifth of UK workers “could be off sick at the same time” and it is “highly likely that we will see a growing number of UK cases”.

If your workforce needs to stay at home because of a Coronavirus emergency, how can you ensure that it’s business as usual?

We’ve created a 4-step checklist to help you prepare for this eventuality. It asks you to consider the following:

  • Data security
  • Access to data
  • Home office set up
  • Communication, collaboration and management

Fill in your details here to get this urgent checklist emailed to you NOW.

Windows 7 – End of Support

As of the 14th of January 2020, the Windows 7 operating system will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft. This means that the operating system will no longer adapt to the latest threats and will become increasingly unsafe to use.

Most PC’s that run Windows 7 are over five years old, so it may be worth considering replacing such devices. For NP clients, there are a number of options available.

Device As A Service is a leasing option that can be applied to a wide range of device’s. The lease duration can be up to 36 months and payments can be monthly, quarterly or annually.

There are two types of DAAS agreement:

Residual Value – at the end of the term, you have the option to return the device, or continue to lease with an updated model.

Finance – pay monthly and own the device outright at the end of the term.

Alternatively, if a one off equipment purchase is better suited to your needs then our team will be delighted to advise.

NP only supply devices that have Windows 10 Pro pre-installed. Through use of our remote monitoring software, we are able to advise on suitable hardware specs for any supported user.

Should you have any questions about the above points, our consultants will be delighted to advise. You can contact us on 0151 257 7754 or via email (info@np.technology).

North West business owners fall for clever webcam scam – and lose £££ thousands

A number of local business owners and managers in the North West have fallen for a new scam that sees them paying thousands of pounds in Bitcoin – to prevent potentially embarrassing videos from being released.

The so-called “sextortion” scam has been seen dozens of times over the last few weeks by local data security expert Thomas Greaves at NP.

Yet the scam has now been revealed as nothing more than a clever bluff. And can be prevented with a webcam cover costing just £3.

“The scam is clever, because it targets the deep emotional fears of intelligent people with lots to lose,” Thomas said.

“They get an unsolicited email from a scammer claiming to have a webcam video recording of them browsing the web during their personal time. It’s not specific about what has been recorded, which means the reader jumps to their own conclusion.

“Critically, the scam email also contains their password, which makes them believe they have indeed been hacked and secretly videoed. Some people submit to the spammer’s requests in desperation. They send off £1,000 or more of Bitcoin, to prevent the video being released.”

Thomas added: “What most people don’t realise is that this hasn’t been targeted specifically at them, and there is no video recording at all. It’s a generic email sent to millions of people whose security has been breached in the past.”

Every laptop and phone released these days have built in webcams.

It is possible for the cameras to be operated without people realising it – although this is rare.

Thomas said: “Our advice to North West business owners and managers is to do three things.

“First, fit sliding webcam covers to all of their devices. Second, reset all passwords and use a password manager. This fills in passwords automatically, so they can use a set of unintelligible characters rather than a word they’ll have to remember.

“And third not to panic if they do get a scammy looking email. They should not be embarrassed. Talk to a data security expert who sees this sort of thing every day and can offer invaluable context.”

Any local business owner or manager who is worried about this scam should visit https://np.technology and book a 30-minute data security review.

NP Projects Ltd was formed in 2004, and now looks after hundreds of local businesses in the North West.

Would your business pass the 57 minute data security challenge?

Here’s a bold challenge for you. I’m confident that if I were to visit your business today, I’d find a weakness in your IT system within just 57 minutes.

I call this our 57 minute Data Security Challenge. I bet I can uncover a way to get into your system, or an unsafe working practice.

All I’ll do is ask you some questions and have a quick look at your computers, and the systems your staff are using.

You see, cyber criminals are always looking for ways into computer systems, and countless business owners make it really easy for them. Just having anti-virus software in place, even if it’s really good, simply isn’t enough in 2018.

There are a lot of great anti-virus products out there, but never assume they will protect you from all threats. If cyber attackers really want to find a way in, there are plenty of other options available to them.

It’s all about perception. One of the biggest security problems I see every day is the attitude that it’s only the bigger companies that are at risk.

The fact is, companies of all sizes face exactly the same threats. And cyber attackers particularly love the ones that take a blasé approach to security.

Fill in your detail now to get your free guide on taking the 57 minute data security challenge.
